The 100 books meme as lists. I tend to read non-fiction a lot more than fiction (except for easy to read stuff like Pratchett or crime). Am I missing out? Any that would change my life more than a really informative non-fiction book? ( Read more ) |

I don't know whether to be amused or aghast at this [rejected] petition on the Number 10 website that seems to imply Carlisle is in Scotland.
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Make it right that both Carlisle United and Swansea play in their domestic League .
Or perhaps they wanted the PM to move the border south? With all that free social care and prescriptions, no tuition fees and STV would Carlisle object too much? |

Today is Workers' Memorial Day - when we are asked to remember all those who are killed in the line of work, and remember the importance of health and safety to all of us who toil. Accountancy isn't so dangerous, but day after day people die on building sites, fishing trawlers, transporting goods or driving forklifts. It is always terrible, but even more so when it is preventable, caused by the failure of bosses to make systems safe.
Rest in peace. We remember. |

| Spring is sprung, for now |
[Apr. 3rd, 2008|11:36 pm] |
The weather has been (pretty) wonderful since heading back to Durham on Sunday - really feeling like Spring again, and making my current office desk feel positively tropical (seated directly opposite several large south facing windows). Went for a walk down Houghall Woods on Monday which felt very springy with daffodils, birds, livestock etc. Houghall never seems as well known as it ought to be - at some point the County Council has spent huge amounts landscaping what was an industrial post-mining landscape into woods and providing a 'discovery trail'. Got some nice photos too and found a leaf skeleton left over from Autumn!
Was hoping to enjoy spring more and go to Whitby on Sunday (am working Saturday), but have just looked at the weather for the weekend - snow showers! |

Came home from Chesterfield last night after being stuck on the A1(M) for way too long to find our electricity out. Eventually established that the connection between our house and next door was no more (a daft set-up if you ask me). NEDL came out quickly and courtesy of some drilling and a big wire running through into next door we now have power, but are expecting NEDL back any day now to put a new line in - involving much digging of our drive and possibly our kitchen. Boh. So much for our cunning plan of a cocktail do this weekend. |

| Weddings |
[Aug. 26th, 2007|12:47 am] |
Had a great time at Chris and Jennifer's wedding on Thursday at Lumley Castle What a wonderful day it was and Chris and Jennifer looked absolutely over-the-moon. Everyone looked amazing - bride, groom, bridesmaids, guests. It all brought back many happy memories of my own wedding four years ago. The speeches all went well and I only managed to end up with on real foot-in-mouth moment when I got a little over-enthusiastic while ad-libbing - always a danger when one's mouth works more quickly than one's brain. The ceilidh was great - I love the dancing and is far more social than just gyrating on the spot. Spent the night at Lumley Castle too which was very impressive, and obviously very convenient. Helen and I were able to sit out in the garden under the stars with a hip flask of whisky once the reception had broken up.
Friday just missed seeing Chris and Jennifer off at Durham station, but managed to catch up with several other wedding guests at lunchtime for a picnic on Palace Green in the glorious sunshine, an afternoon messing around in boats on the Wear, then booze and food with Marga and Sue topped off by the Vic with them, Jenny and Sarah, Panda, Rachael and SpartacusAlexis. Got mocked for talking posh though, which I guess made a change from getting mocked for talking the other way the night before.
Best of luck Jennifer and Chris.
As for me, am now shattered and need the weekend to recover. |

If I were a Discworld character I would be the Librarian. Although there was a surprising showing of Oggishness in there.
 | You scored as The Librarian. You're the Librarian! Once a wizard, now an Orang-utan (due to an unfortunate magical accident), you refuse to be turned back for a few reasons: In this form, it's easier to reach the shelves and hold more books; having the strength of five men makes people return their books on time; life's great philosophical questions boil down to 'when do I get my next banana'. You say 'ook', but are usually understood well enough.

| | cold | ] | My main blog site seems to have died temporarily, just as I had lots of political stuff I wanted to comment on to the world. Pah. How will the world cope without the ability to read my pontifications.
Still chugging along through orientation at work - due to actually do some finance sometime later this month. Have had a very interesting few weeks though, learning lots about the health service and been in an ambulance! Have just spent a day and a bit with the chaplain at Darlington Memorial Hospital which was very inspiring - and a very challenging job by the sound of it. Went to the RC Mass in the hospital chapel which was a first (despite me having a quite ecumenical outlook) although didn't Communicate for the obvious reason of not being a Catholic.
Didn't win the Elm Tree pub quiz last night or the beer round. :( |

Been busy at work being sent around various departments in order to get an understanding of how the different parts of the health service fit together. Much chance to ask lots of questions. Even had to scrub up to look round an operating theatre today (although without a patient for obvious reasons). Still very interesting indeed. Have also started at New College so am finally an FE student! |

I start my new job later today. Am currently in York where I will do my regional induction (to be followed by a national one, and presumably a local one). Will have to let people know how it goes. |

| New Job! New Car! |
[Aug. 4th, 2006|11:03 pm] |
Now seems next to certain that I will start a new job on 4th September - on the NHS Financial Management Training Scheme which means both a rather useful pay rise, having to do exams again (for the CIPFA professional accountancy qualification) and becoming a member of a Students' Union again (New College).
In preparation for that I've bought another car (buses are great, but not if you have to commute to a variety of different sites around the County) - a second hand Suzuki Ignis. Will hopefully get plenty of time to get used to it over the weekend. |

Internet returned on Friday afternoon, just a few hours before we went away for the weekend (third anniversary thang) to Northumberland. Have somehow avoided melting. Stayed in a pub in Allenhead (on the wrong side of the Durham - Northumberland border), and visited Hexham and Kielder and then a slow saunter back through Weardale (via a Museum and such). Then there was fireworks (not for us though, but for Bowburn's 100th anniversary, but they were nice - except to the cat). |

[Jul. 11th, 2006|03:50 pm] |
My home internet connection is dead, deceased, no more, and I'm not due to get one back until the 21st. Perhaps BT will deliver better service than Tiscali and not pass me round (literally) in a circle when trying to sort out problems.
Grrrr.
Also, hurrah for the library! |

Am tired tired - obviously fell out of practice at working full time. Have started the new job. Spent the day learning about housing benefit, assembling Ikea furniture for the flats and painting cupboards ready for the first arrivals next week. |

| Scary |
[Apr. 22nd, 2006|10:21 pm] |
|
I've spent the last few days 'chain-reading' Patricia Cornwell's 'Kay Scarpetta' seriess. And now we keep getting silent phone calls. Scary. Bit like watching a psychological thriller and then hearing noises in the house when on your own that you are almost, but not quite 100% sure is just the boiler. |
